Wildfire Season

In July of 2025, a number of different posters by the Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition began appearing in some of the central areas of Winnipeg where I walk. It's primarily referencing the devastating wildfires that have displaced tens of thousands of people at various points this summer, and severely impacted air quality across this vast province and beyond.

Along with the posters themselves are smaller printouts explaining that this is a project with support from the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Foundation (philanthropy, aka thinly veiled money laundering and capitalist PR). However, there are still people who insist on tearing down these posters, as you can see in some of the below photos (and several of the ones I was able to get in their full state have since been peeled away at), so clearly there are individuals in these neighbourhoods who love dangerously poor air quality that goes beyond what Environment and Climate Change Canada bothers to measure anymore (it's just always "10+"). Those people should simply lock themselves in a room that we can vent all the smoke into, if they love wildfire smoke so much.

To the people who made and put up these posters: thanks for doing this. We're all suffering together and we don't need to be. I hope I'm helping out by posting these on my little speck of dust on the vast internet, to share it just a little bit farther than where the signs are posted.

a poster with a black background and 'leave the zombie death march' in blocky hand-drawn white letters. below it is a smaller poster with the headline 'it's wildfire season?!' and text too small to read

a white poster with a black diamond-shaped border cut into four corners like a safety warning sign, within it the outline of the province of Manitoba with a flame over it, and the caption 'climate' on top and 'crisis' below

a red poster with a white space inside surrounded by flame-like borders of the red background, and red blocky handwritten text saying 'brought to you by climate change' in the middle

a half red and half blue background sign pasted to a square pole, with a white box at the top with letters cut out to say 'respect' exposing the split background, and text below saying 'the water' and 'the land' with white triangles representing trees surrounding another box at the bottom saying 'no mining, no pipelines'

a red poster with text cut out saying 'wind fire wind smoke' and a white block at the bottom with red cursive writing saying 'it's tiresome'

a white poster with red letters and shapes cut out saying 'we need a forest fire strategy' with large flames and trees

a green poster with white boxes with letters cut out saying 'i miss playing outside' and small white flowers at the bottom

a red poster with white cutout letters saying 'more pipelines = more wildfires'

a white poster with red text saying 'land back for life' but somebody's tried to peel the poster off so parts of the letters are missing
